Canadian Violinist Gower Sun is a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician, and recording artist based in British Columbia. His playing is described by Conductor Garth Williams and violinist Jeffrey Plotnick as “very musical and smooth and always in a controlled manner,” with “a fine spirit that shines through.”

Starting violin at the rather late age of 9, he progressed quickly, completing RCM’s Grade 8 violin exam in just over one year. Gower was a recipient of the Laura Chestnut Endowed Music Scholarship for five consecutive years before graduating high school and was a two-time recipient of the Katherine Cummings President’s Endowed Music Scholarship while doing his Bachelors of Music Degree. With a list of repertoire ranging from Vivaldi to Ysaye, Gower’s interpretation and taste of music is all-encompassing. He avidly supports and performs contemporary Canadian works, including those by Patrick Cardy, Srul Irving Glick, and Peter Schickele.

Gower is an active chamber musician participating in multiple groups. He is the violinist of Trio Müvészeti, which won 1st prize in the National Chamber Class at the 2019 BC Arts Provincials, represented Team BC and was awarded 2nd prize at the FCMF National Music Festival Competition.

Aside from being the current Associate Concertmaster in VAMSO and the former Concertmaster in the Langley Symphony Orchestra, Gower has performed with and collaborated with groups such as the Borealis String Quartet, members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and UBC Symphony Orchestra. These performances have taken him to venues such as the Orpheum, Queen Elizabeth Theatre, Chan Centre, Pyatt Hall, and Michael J. Fox Theatre.

As a recording artist, Gower frequently appears in film scores and independent music productions. He was a violinist at the 2019 Canadian Golden Maple International Film Festival Orchestra under conductor and composer Jin Zhang and has recorded in numerous notable studios such as the Armoury, The Warehouse, SAYA Sound Studio, and Crew Studios.

Gower teaches students from a wide range of age and level. His students have multiple times been awarded the RCM Regional Gold Medal for Highest Exam Mark in addition multiple prizes at local competitions.

Gower plays on an Italian violin attributed to the Testore family, (Milan, c.1750).
