Bio

2018/2019 Season

Gower Sun, violinist, is a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician, and recording artist based in British Columbia, Canada. Violinist Jeffrey Plotnick observed the “fine spirit that shines through” Gower’s performances and Conductor Garth Williams described his playing as “very musical and smooth.”

Aside from being the concertmaster in the Langley Honours Orchestra, Gower has performed and collaborated with groups such as the Borealis String Quartet, members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and UBC Symphony Orchestra. These performances have taken him to venues such as the Chan Centre, Pyatt Hall, and Michael J. Fox Theatre.

With a list of repertoire ranging from Vivaldi to Shostakovich, Gower’s interpretation and taste of classical music is all-encompassing. He also performs numerous Canadian and contemporary works, including those by Patrick Cardy, Srul Irving Glick, and Peter Schickele. 

As a recording artist, Gower frequently appears in film scores and independent music productions. He has recorded in notable studios such as the Armoury, The Warehouse, SAYA Sound Studio, and Crew Studios. 

Starting violin at the late age of 9, he progressed quickly completing the level 8 RCM violin exam in just one year. Gower was a recipient of the Laura Chestnut Endowed Music Scholarship for five consecutive years before graduating high school and beginning his Bachelors in Music Degree at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, studying under violinist Patricia Shih. His achievements in several music festivals throughout the lower mainland resulted in invitations to perform at the BC Arts Provincial Festival, where his chamber group Trio Müvészeti won First Place in the National Chamber Class category and represented BC at the FCMF National Music Festival.

Gower also teaches violin and piano across multiple platforms, and regularly plays in church.

Gower plays on an Italian violin attributed to Carlo Antonio Testore, (Milan, c.1750).
